MEETING OF THE

SEMINOLE SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT

FEBRUARY  28, 2012

SEMINOLE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY, MAIN BRANCH, CASSELBERRY

MEETING CALLED TO ORDER AT 5:10 PM

IN ATTENDANCE: TIMOTHY CAMBRIDGE, JUDITH BENSON, DAVID TORRE, KIARA ASHANTI

GUEST: STEVE BARNES

ABSENT: ALEX BUNKER

BARNES TALKED TO THE SUPERVISORS AS A FORMER MEMBER OF THE BOARD. HE ENCOURAGED THEM TO GET INVOLVED IN THE COMMUNITY IN ORDER TO GET ENERGIZED AND TO HELP EDUCATE PEOPLE ABOUT WHAT THE SSWCD DOES.

THE BOARD, HE REMINDED THEM, CAN DO A LOT THOUGH THEY DON’T HAVE A LOT OF POWER. HE EXPLAINED THERE ARE FORCES IN THE STATE TRYING TO GET RID OF THE SWCDs ACROSS THE STATE IN ORDER TO CONSOLODATE POWER.

SUPERVISORS DISCUSSED WAYS IN WHICH THEY COULD BECOME MORE VISIBLE AND GET MORE RECOGNITION IN THE COMMUNITY.

A MOTION WAS MADE BY ASHANTI TO SIGN A PROCLAMATION RECOGNIZING FORMER MEMBER MIKE BARR, WHO HAS RECENTLY PASSED AWAY AND WHO HAD BEEN A DRIVING FORCE IN THE COMMUNITY (BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER HIS TENURE ON THE SSWCD). TORRE SECONDED THE MOTION. SUPERVISORS SIGNED THE PROCLAMATION.

TORRE ASKED THAT SOMEONE ELSE SERVE AS TREASURER AS HIS SCHEDULE NO LONGER ALLOWED HIM TO PERFORM THOSE DUTIES. THE SUPERVISORS TOOK UP THE MATTER OF ELECTING NEW OFFICERS.

CAMBRIDGE NOMINATED HIMSELF AS CHAIR. ASHANTI SECONDED THE MOTION. BENSON NOTED THAT THE CHAIR NEEDED TO ATTEND ALL THE MEETINGS. CAMBRIDGE WAS ELECTED UNANIMOUSLY.

ASHANTI NOMINATED HIMSELF TO BE TREASURER. TORRE SECONDED IT. ASHANTI WAS ELECTED UNANIMOUSLY. HE SAID HE WOULD TAKE OVER THE COLLECTION AND DISTRIBUTION OF THE MAIL IN ADDITION TO THE TREASURER DUTIES AND THAT HE WOULD LOOK INTO INSURANCE MATTERS FOR THE BOARD.

BENSON NOMINATED BUNKER AS SECRETARY. CAMBRIDGE SECONDED THE MOTION. BUNKER WAS ELECTED UNANIMOUSLY.

BENSON NOMINATED HERSELF AS VICE CHAIR. TORRE SECONDED THE MOTION. BENSON WAS ELECTED UNANIMOUSLY.

CAMBRIDGE SUGGESTED THAT HE COULD PURCHASE RAINBARRELS FOR $36 EACH AND HE BELIEVED IT WOULD BE A GOOD FUNDRAISER FOR THE BOARD TO SELL THE RAINBARRELS AND TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT WATER CONSERVATION IN THAT WAY. BENSON SAID THAT THERE WOULD BE OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUCH A FUNDRAISER IN THE FALL. THE BOARD DISCUSSED HOW THEY COULD WORK WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS TO DO EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS.

THE MEETING WAS ADJORNED AT 6:01 PM
