Producing new plastic from recycled material uses only two-thirds of the energy required to manufacture it from raw materials.
Plastics require 100 to 400 years to break down at the landfill.
Five 2-liter recycled PET bottles produce enough fiberfill to make a ski jacket.

Meeting Minutes for                                            December 2014

Meeting called to order by Chair Judith Benson at 6:16pm.

Quorum confirmed for action items purposes


·        Reading and approval of the November 2014 minutes:  motion to approve by Supervisor Sturgill and seconded by Supervisor Gaussart. Motion carries.

·        Introduction of the incoming Supervisors. Supervisor Gaussart suggested they approach the podium for individual address to the Board.

·        Chair Benson asks attendees also to introduce themselves: Ed Ghilgliari, David Menzel,

·        Upon inquiry of the attendees, Chair mentioned that previous agenda would be posted at a later time on the website.

·        Introduction of the Longwood Deputy Mayor Ben Paris.

·        Reading of the Minutes and motion to approve by Supervisor Sturgill and seconded by Supervisor Gaussart.







·        As of December 2014: Current balance is

o   $ 524.07 in S&W account

o   $ 413.94 in Conserve All Ways Inc.

·        Outgoing Treasurer will bring the checkbook and Treasurer’s items to the January 2015 meeting.

·        Discussion over the NRCS’s agreement - cancelled due to absence of Superior Garrett and Supervisor Duncan.

·        Discussion regarding the City of Sanford seeking from the Seminole Soil & Water Board a letter of support. This kind of support had been extended by previous Boards.

o   Motion to approve a letter of support from the Board by Supervisor Gaussart

o   Seconded by Scott Sturgill

o   No further discussion – motions carried

·        Discussion over an anti-fracking bill that is being reviewed in Florida HR subcommittees.

o   Supervisor Gaussart and Sturgill Board did propose any motion to further discussion of the issue brought by Chair - Discussion tabled


·        Luka’s Farm / Hunt Club Water Treatment issue reported on Nov, 30th 2014.

o   Discussion over the plant failure and resulting pollution affecting a Hunt Club neighborhood (Sweet Water Creek). Chair showed the Board some pictures of leakage coming from the failed sewage system and overflow into the streets.

§  Discussion over health hazards

§  Discussion over D.E.P.’s weak response to stated concern from the Chair. Discussion over currently the fact that there might be no current recourse available due to the absence of a distinctive trigger mechanism prompting to action leaving DEP and/or/ Seminole County out of the loop.

§  Discussion over the type of response that should come from the Seminole Soil and Water Board when similar situation arise in Seminole County. Board will resume conversation during January meeting under “Old Business” and discuss a “loophole” situation that seemingly does not require this private power plant to clean up the overflow. (Agenda item placed into the Old business for January 2014).

·        The Orange County Soil & Water Board has invited the SSW Board to attend its Feb. 3rd meeting at 5:30 pm located at 200 S. Rosalind Ave in Orlando.

Special address from the Chair and outgoing Supervisor Sturgill and Supervisor Gaussart

Chair Benson gave a special thank you to Supervisor Sturgill for among other things, the assistance provided with the archives. Chair Benson also extended a special thank you to Supervisor Gaussart for moving the meetings from the Casselberry Librairy to the Longwood Chamber and helping elevate the quality of this Board before the Members and the electorate.

-        Scott Sturgill thanked the Board and the Chair for the past two years working along this Board

-        Ariel Gaussart thanked the Board and the Chair and particularly the inclusion of the Social Network medium
