Air Filters
Keeping your air filters clean can increase air conditioner efficiency by 5 to 15 percent. At the very least, they should be checked every three months during the cooling season.

SEMINOLE SOIL AND CONSERVATION DISTRICT

MEETING MINUTES

TUESDAY, DEC. 16, 2008

In Attendance:

(Supervisors) Deborah Schaefer, Steve Barnes, Tim Brodeur, Alex Bunker; (Associate Supervisors) Vicki DeSormier, Gabrielle Milch;

(Guest) David Mahnken, Robert King

The meeting commenced at 6:02 p.m.

Guest David Mahnken introduced himself, saying he would like to become more involved in the SSWCD. He has a master's degree in soil and water science, he said, and is employed by E Sciences Incorporated in Orlando, an environmental, engineering and ecological consulting firm. He lives in Winter Springs and has lived in Seminole County for 30 years.

Guest Robert King introduced himself. He has been involved in water issues in Seminole County for many years, most notably as president of the Friends of Lake Jesup. He came to the meeting, he said, to "keep an eye on things."

Minutes from the November meeting were submitted. Alex Bunker moved that they be accepted. Tim Brodeur seconded the motion. They were approved unanimously.

Treasurer's Report (Jeff Bauer was not in attendance. Receipts were collected to be brought to him so he could be asked to write checks before the next meeting.)

Supervisor Report (Alex Bunker) Alex suggested that a letter promoting the 2009 Envirothon be sent out by Jan. 1. Participating teams should be asked to pay $100 each to take part in the event. She also brought up that Equinox Documentaries (www.equinoxdocumentaries.org) is planning a film based on the book "Eden to Sahara", which was published by SSWCD. Since we are selling/promoting the book, she suggested that we work with Equinox to put together a curriculum for teachers to use in conjunction with the book/film. Steve Barnes suggested we try to sell the books online through the Conserve Seminole site (www.conserveseminole.org) with a link to and from the Equinox site. Tim Brodeur suggested the book sales could also be promoted on PBS in conjunction with the documentary. Alex also suggested that SSWCD needs to work harder to promote SSWCD projects as volunteer opportunities in the community.

Supervisor Report (Steve Barnes) Steve said he had set up a SSWCD page on Facebook (www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=35604503821) which has approximately 60 members…people who are willing and ready to volunteer when SSWCD gets started on community projects. Deborah Schafer added that a link to the Conserve Seminole site has been placed on the Seminole County website (www.seminolecountyfl.gov) as well. Steve said SSWCD needs to do an event once a month, at least, to raise the profile of the organization. He will be giving a presentation about Wetlands at Seminole Community College on Feb. 2. He suggested, also, that we re-visit the idea of doing an art show. Gabbie Milch suggested Bill Tippitt is getting ready for a large art sale and suggested we partner with him. Steve said the Central Florida Zoo's offer to host an art show was still open. Finally, he suggested the board take up, at the next meeting, the idea of selling memberships to SSWCD.

Chairman's Report (Deborah Schafer) Deborah suggested we talk to Peggy Bellflower about having a Martini Moonlight Cruise on the St. Johns River to her house as a fundraiser. She said she got a letter from the Duval County SWCD asking other SWCDs to send them money. She didn't think SSWCD should try a similar approach. She said SSWCD's Water  Summit would bring the goal of water conservation to the forefront and that "we would be able to speak out with one voice about the one goal of conservation".  She suggested Vicki DeSormier be made administrator for the SSWCD. Steve Barnes said he would not vote on the matter if he were brought up in a motion (he is engaged to DeSormier and it would be a conflict of interest). Deborah suggested Vicki be paid a small salary each month if the position were created and that part of the duties of the position would be to find grants for the SSWCD and a higher salary could be paid once grants were earned. The suggestion was tabled until the next meeting. Deborah suggested Chris Bellflower be named an associate supervisor, but Steve Barnes asked that Chris submit a resume before a motion was made and the item was tabled until the next meeting.

Robert King told the board that the Florida Department of Transportation is trying to put together a program for the opening of the 46 Bridge at Lake Jesup. He suggested that the SSWCD put together a presentation to be a part of the event. No action was taken on the suggestion.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:45 p.m.
